Kerry Kennedy, president of the JFK Foundation, is very embarrassed by the letter addressed to the Algerian government by five NGOs, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, denouncing the continuing violations of human rights in Algeria.
Kerry Kennedy’s embarrassment is all the greater that these condemnations were expressed by most influential human rights NGOs in the world. These are, besides HRW and Amnesty International, the Euro- Mediterranean Human Rights Network, the International Federation for Human Rights and the World Organization against Torture.
All these organizations have jointly asked the Algerian government to “allow them access to the country.” Kerry Kennedy who chairs the Kennedy Foundation center for justice and human rights would have liked to join her voice to these NGOs to denounce the Algerian government’s behavior but she abstained out of fear to be confounded because of her unconditional support to the Polisario, according to a reliable source in Tindouf.
Kerry Kennedy cannot denounce human rights violations in Algeria without falling into contradiction since she keeps silent on what happens in the Polisario-controlled camps in Algeria, said the same source.
Actually, an unprecedented turmoil has been shaking the Tindouf camps for more than two weeks, triggered by the Sahrawis’ anger at their dire living conditions. But as usual, the Polisario militia and elements of the Algerian military intelligence services (DRS) brutally clamped down on the protesters. And as usual these events are not covered by the international media because the Tindouf camps are held in total isolation.
The Polisario and the Algerian DRS do not tolerate any dissenting voice. They ban the Sahrawis from leaving the camps and control virtually everything in what looks like concentration camps in the desert, the same source said.
