Sahara: King Mohammed welcomes increasing compatibility between Moroccan and international positions

King Mohammed VI reiterated on Monday Morocco’s commitment to the momentum launched by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the settlement of the Sahara issue, while noting the increasing compatibility between the fundamentals upheld by Morocco and the stances adopted by the international community in this area.

In his address to the Nation on the 65th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People, the Moroccan sovereign recalls that Morocco’s commitment is based on the principles that have already been posed by the Kingdom.

At the forefront of these principles, the fact that no settlement of the Sahara issue is possible outside the full sovereignty of Morocco and outside the Autonomy Initiative, which the international community has recognized as serious and credible.

There is “increasing compatibility between these principles and the stances adopted by the international community,” noted King Mohammed VI, for whom the recent resolutions adopted by the Security Council and the African Union Summit “confirm, without any doubt, that the UN has exclusive authority to manage the political process relating to the Sahara issue.

In this connection, he paid tribute to the African leaders who “have reacted positively to Morocco’s principled positions and have responded favorably to the Security Council’s call on members of the international community to support its efforts”.
